More Americans worried about finding a good job: Survey

(The Hill) — More Americans are worried about finding a good job than in previous years, according to a new poll.

The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll found that 47 percent of respondents said when it comes to their financial situation, they are “not very confident” or “not at all confident” that they “would be able to find a good job if” they desired one.

Thirty-seven percent in 2023 and 27 percent in 2021 said the same about their confidence level in finding a good job, marking a jump of 20 points in the last four years.

In the recent AP-NORC poll, 21 percent said they are either “extremely confident” or “very confident” considering their financial situation when it comes to finding a good job if they desired one.

U.S. private sector businesses lost 32,000 workers last month as increasing worries about the economy caused employers to limit their payrolls.

The ADP National Employment Report featured another intense drop in the private sector labor market, which has been losing energy throughout the year.

“Despite the strong economic growth we saw in the second quarter, this month’s release further validates what we’ve been seeing in the labor market, that U.S. employers have been cautious with hiring,” ADP chief economist Nela Richardson said.

In the AP-NORC poll, 12 percent said their family was “getting ahead” when it came to their financial situation, 59 percent said their family was “holding steady” and 28 percent said their family was “falling behind.”

The survey took place Oct. 9-13, featuring 1,289 people and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
